Manchester United takes 5-point lead

BLACKBURN, England -- Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young scored late goals to lead Manchester United over Blackburn 2-0 Monday night and open a season-high, five-point lead in the Premier League over Manchester City with seven games left.Valencia cut in from the right wing and sent a swerving shot from a tight angle past goalkeeper Paul Robinson and into the far corner in the 81st minute. Young scored on a low shot in the 86th.

"It was a long night. We had to persevere and persevere," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "We weren't making any clear-cut chances for a long time. But it was an important win, and it typifies the history of the club."

Blackburn, fighting to avoid relegation, had a goal disallowed when Morten Gamst Pedersen's 63rd-minute effort was ruled out because the ball went out of play in the buildup.

Defending champion United (24-3-4) has 76 points, while second-place Manchester City (22-4-5) has 71 following a 1-1-2 skid.

City, seeking its first league title since 1968, hosts United on April 30. United is trying to extend its record for English league titles to 20.

Blackburn (7-17-7) dropped below Queens Park Rangers into 18th place and the relegation zone.

"We are just a little bit frustrated, because we felt if we could have held on for another five minutes we could have really frustrated them," Blackburn manager Steve Kean said.

Spain

Alvaro Negredo, Manu del Moral and Jesus Navas scored second-half goals to give Sevilla a 3-1 win over Mallorca in the Spanish league that moved it within a point of sixth-place Osasuna for the last Europa League place.

Negredo scored in the 51st minute off Navas' corner kick, and Del Moral doubled the lead in the 62nd. Jose Antonio Reyes sliced a pass through the defense that Navas tapped in for a three-goal lead in the 68th.

Mallorca substitute Tomer Hemed scored in the 78th.

"cynicism" FIFA Reform adviser share

GENEVA -- A FIFA anti-corruption adviser said the process of cleaning up soccer's world governing body is on track despite president Sepp Blatter delivering fewer promises than expected.

"Progress is as good as we could have hoped, which is not the same as perfect or ideal," said Alexandra Wrage, president of anti-bribery consultant TRACE.

Wrage was interviewed by phone from the United States on Saturday, the day after Blatter announced a limited slate of reforms approved by his executive committee.

Wrage said the 13-member panel led by Swiss law professor Mark Pieth worked at "lightning speed" to present FIFA with a first phase of reform proposals.

However, FIFA's executive committee did not fully address many of the panel's requests, and shifted most decisions to 2013.

"I know there is a lot of cynicism, and I share some of that," Wrage said, acknowledging suspicion among many soccer fans over whether FIFA has a genuine desire to change after bribery and vote-rigging scandals. "Although I think things are going as well as they can at this point."

While FIFA has committed to revamping its ethics court and exerting tighter financial controls, the measures -- which still need final approval next month from FIFA's 208 member nations -- fell short of Wrage's expectations.

Blatter's colleagues did not grant the Pieth panel's "fundamental" request to guarantee executive committee seats for the elected ethics and compliance officials. They also did not create a separate nominations committee tasked with proposing and vetting candidates for future FIFA positions.

"I'm disappointed by that. That is one of the things I felt was very important," said Wrage, a Canadian lawyer and global authority on anti-bribery compliance.

Blatter emerged from Friday's session with Pieth at FIFA headquarters hailing "unanimous" backing from his 24-man ruling committee on a "historic" day for his reform mission.

Yet proposals such as revising the ethics code and requiring greater transparency in FIFA's commercial deals, worth $1 billion annually, were not mentioned.

The executive committee also did not vote on potentially tricky decisions to cut their tenure by imposing term limits, and diluting their power by bringing independent outsiders into FIFA's inner circle.

Wrage believes the "next big step" for Pieth's team in its scheduled 18-month task is finding candidates to fill these key seats.

"It's critically important to the success of this process," Wrage said. "It has to be somebody with impeccable credentials and an international reputation."

Wrage expects the elected ethics committee leaders to have the expertise and "unfettered" authority to order investigations into recent allegations of wrongdoing, which Pieth's team said FIFA failed to deal with effectively.

This includes examining how FIFA reached decisions to award Russia and Qatar hosting rights for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, respectively.

"They will on their own initiative be able to look at and investigate whatever they deem appropriate," Wrage said. "That is at the very core of an independent investigative arm."

Wrage believes FIFA members do have an appetite for reform, and that the Pieth panel's involvement is not merely "window dressing." Her colleagues on the advisory group include former Watergate investigator Michael Hershman and Britain's former attorney-general Peter Goldsmith.

"That's clearly not something any of us wanted to be associated with," said Wrage, whose expenses for her FIFA work are funded by the Annapolis, Md.-based TRACE.

"If the scandals aren't dealt with, and the reform isn't completed, we're not going to be able to get anybody to focus on anything else, and I think (Blatter) knows that."

Sean Payton, Loomis hearings set

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton and general manager Mickey Loomis are planning to be at the NFL's New York offices Tuesday for their respective appeals of suspensions as a result of the bounty program the team used from 2009-11, a source close to the situation told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has vowed to make it an expedited appeal, with his ruling coming days after Payton and Loomis get a chance to state their case.

Payton was suspended for one year, beginning April 1 and ending after the Super Bowl. Loomis was suspended for eight games, beginning after the Saints' final preseason game.

Saints spokesman Greg Bensel on Friday confirmed that Loomis was appealing his eight-game suspension and, separately, the team would challenge its $500,000 fine and loss of second-round draft picks this year and in 2013. The Saints did not confirm Payton's appeal.

Saints linebackers coach Joe Vitt also will appeal his six-game suspension, according to his attorney, David Cornwell. No date for that appeal has been set.

In other developments, the NFL Players Association has told players involved in the bounty case there's a chance they could face criminal charges and it hired outside counsel to represent them if needed.

While Goodell mulls how to punish as many as 27 players for their role in the scandal, the NFLPA recommended players have a lawyer and union representative present when they are interviewed by NFL investigators, two people familiar with the case told The Associated Press on Sunday.

The union plans to head to New York this week to meet with league security staff and review additional evidence, taking up the NFL on an offer it made more than once.

DeMaurice Smith, executive director of the NFL Players Association, told the website Pro Player Insiders that the league hasn't turned over what the union would consider direct evidence of player involvement in a 'pay to injure' scheme.

"If there is direct evidence of a "pay to injure" scheme implicating players or anybody involved," Smith said, "we are asking the league to turn over that information."

Former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who left the Saints after last season to join the St. Louis Rams, ran the bounty program and has been suspended indefinitely. Williams has not yet appealed his suspension and it is not known if he will do so.

Payton has several options in finding a temporary replacement. He could reach into his staff and promote Vitt, offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr., offensive line coach Aaron Kromer or defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Carmichael, according to a source, would prefer to just call plays, and Vitt is suspended for six games. If Spagnuolo is promoted, Payton might have to find a new defensive coordinator.

Payton and Loomis also have met with retired coach Bill Parcells.

Kobe Bryant's 40 points

LOS ANGELES -- Kobe Bryant needed 11 seconds to make his first basket, then he hit his second and a few minutes later another. No way was the Los Angeles Lakers' superstar going to struggle for a second straight game.

Bryant finished with 40 points -- his fifth such game this season -- one night after missing his first 15 shots in a win over New Orleans, and Pau Gasol added 26 as the Lakers rallied for the second consecutive game against one of the West's worst teams, coming away with a 120-112 win over Golden State on Sunday night.

"It's always interesting to me to hear people talk after a game like that," Bryant said, referring to the critics who pounced on his offensive struggles Saturday. "The amount of idiots that live out here after 16 years baffle me. I guess people just get dumber over the years."

Bryant scored 13 points in the opening quarter and 4 in the second when he sat for six minutes.

"Once we started the game and he knocked down his first three or four shots, I knew it was going to be another aggressive night for him," Gasol said.

Andrew Bynum added 23 points and nine assists in his best game since being traded to the Lakers two weeks ago. Gasol and reserve Troy Murphy had 11 rebounds each after All-Star center Andrew Bynum sprained his left ankle in the first quarter of the Lakers' eighth consecutive home win against the Warriors.

"He was able to walk out fine," coach Mike Brown said about Bynum, who left before speaking with reporters.

Bynum landed awkwardly going for a rebound and the team said he had a moderate sprain. He had no points and three rebounds when he left for good with 1:49 to play. The team said X-rays were negative and he would be re-evaluated on Monday. Bynum was coming off a productive month of March, when he averaged 22.2 points and 10.9 rebounds in 17 games.

"He's gotten better," Bryant said. "You see him working on his footwork a lot, he has a lot of moves in his arsenal that he didn't have before. He's much more comfortable doing it and he's gained a great deal of confidence."

If Bynum has to miss a few days, Bryant said the Lakers can adjust.

"I don't think it's a championship formula, but we can for the time being," he said. "Sessions is one of those players who can carry a game offensively, he's a great scorer. And Pau can obviously do what he does."

David Lee led six Warriors in double figures with 27 points. Klay Thompson added 18, Nate Robinson 17, and Richard Jefferson 16 for Golden State, which lost its fifth in a row and 10th in the last 12.

"They had us on the ropes, but we battled back," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. "We put ourselves in position to win the game. They made tough shots, especially Kobe. But that's why he's paid the big bucks."

The Warriors were down 13 points to start the fourth quarter, but outscored the Lakers 19-8 to close within one with Bryant on the bench for part of the run. Jefferson, Robinson and Thompson all had 3-pointers in the spurt with 7 minutes to play.

The Lakers gained some breathing room on a 12-3 run, as Sessions, Bryant and Gasol combined for all the scoring, capped by Bryant's 3 that made it 109-99.

The Warriors weren't done yet. Robinson, who at 5-foot-9 was the shortest player in the game, hit his fifth 3-pointer to get the Warriors within five. Lee's three-point play cut the deficit to three points before Bryant hit a long 3 from in front of the Warriors' bench, making it 115-109 with 1:40 left.

"You definitely know after the game he had yesterday, he was going to come out here, try to be very aggressive and make his first few shots," Dorell Wright said about Bryant. "Guys did a good job on him. He just made real tough shots."

Jefferson answered with a 3 and Golden State was down three. Metta World Peace hit a 3 -- the 10th of the quarter between the teams -- on the Lakers' next possession for a 118-112 lead. After a timeout, Thompson missed a 3 with 1:03 to go, cooling off the long-range shootout.

"I don't think the game was lost in the fourth quarter," Lee said. "The game was lost in the third quarter when they made a nice little run. By the time we fought back, we had to play perfect basketball. They made some tough shots down the stretch."

The Lakers' biggest lead in the first half was nine points, with 12 lead changes and eight ties.

Game notes
It was Bryant's 112th career game with at least 40 points. The Lakers improved to 77-35 in those games. ... The Warriors' next road win will equal their 10 victories away from home last season. ... They haven't beaten the Lakers at Staples Center since March 23, 2008. ... The Warriors signed C Mickell Gladness, playing on a 10-day contract, for the rest of the season. He was not with the team Sunday because of family matters, but is expected to rejoin the Warriors in a few days. Gladness has averaged 2.0 points and 1.3 rebounds in six games. "He's an athletic, big guy who can block shots and finish at the rim," Jackson said. ... The Lakers played the second of their first home back-to-back set of games since the lockout shortened 1998-99 season. ... Jackson turned 47 on Sunday and spent the day with his wife and four kids at their Los Angeles home before going to work.
